Hungary will close its borders to foreign tourists on September 1. Austrians will then no longer be allowed to travel through.
Only those who are Hungarian citizens, who are in quarantine for 14 days and finally have two negative Covid-19 tests may cross the border. For people who live in Austria, but want to travel through, this makes the way much more complicated.
The Hungarian government has decided to take this step due to increasing infection rates and announced the measure on Friday afternoon in Budapest. Foreigners must give a good reason at the border. Government spokesman Gergely Gulyas says that most infections are due to infection abroad.
As in Austria, Hungary currently requires masks to be worn inside closed rooms, with exceptions for the catering trade. In the last 24 hours there have been 132 new infections. Due to the closing of the border, the travel time from Vienna to Belgrade has been extended from a good six to just under eight hours.
